On 27 October 2020, James Fisher Nuclear GmbH (Hamburg), a provider of radiometric instruments for contamination and clearance monitoring systems to the international nuclear market, was acquired by Ludlum Measurements Incorporated (Texas) and rebranded as Ludlum GmbH.
About Ludlum Measurements, Inc.
Ludlum Measurements, Inc. (LMI) designs and manufactures radiation detection instruments and technologies. Founded in 1962 by Don Ludlum, they offer a large array of radiation detection instrumentation, developed to help monitor the safety of personnel and the environment. Their instruments are used in applications such as routine personnel and material monitoring, border security, and emergency response situations. They are committed to making the world a safer place to live and work by providing affordable, dependable, and durable equipment.
LMI has significantly invested in engineering to ensure they sustain a high level of competency and excellence in developing reliable instruments capable of withstanding rough handling and harsh environments. The expertise of their engineering department affords us the capability to develop new designs each year while simultaneously supporting our large product line. We have also heavily invested in becoming a vertically integrated company to better control costs, quality, and delivery times. In-house, automated PC board assembly and plastic injection molding capability, along with photomultiplier tube and plastic scintillator design and manufacturing, all contribute to this philosophy.
In addition to our extensive line of instrumentation, LMI offers repair and calibration service. They support any instrument that they have ever manufactured, no matter how old it is, and also service radiation detection instruments manufactured by other companies. They also offer an instrument repair and calibration training course for customers interested in performing their own calibrations and minor repairs. The training is held several times each year at both their main facility in Sweetwater, TX and their sister company Protean Instrument in Knoxville, TN.
About Ludlum GmbH
Ludlum GmbH provides radiometric instruments for the measurement of radiation levels to facilitate the release of equipment, waste, and people from radioactive areas to clean areas. The market, a subset of the much wider radiation monitoring (RM) market, is known as radiation Contamination and Clearance (C&C) Monitoring.
Ludlum GmbH was originally formed as James Fisher Nuclear GmbH (JFNG) in late 2017 from a team of highly experienced and globally recognized scientists and engineers. By 2018, the company was providing the market with a range products that were modern and incorporated innovative modular hardware and software design, quality, user friendliness including a new graphical interface and combined with lifetime support.
Initial successes for hand and foot monitors were rapidly followed with a number of large free-release waste chambers, several smaller waste monitors, laundry monitors, and in 2019 JFNG entered the higher volume body contamination monitor market with an order for eight systems with new detector technology in Italy.
Now with a team of 19 staff and a very strong order book, Ludlum GmbH is poised for significant growth with competitive products, excellent reference sites, and a highly motivated and skilled team.
Why The Change
Ludlum GmbH has rapidly developed a comprehensive range of modern, high performance and cost effective products. Penetration of its home European markets (EU and UK) have grown rapidly and very successfully. Ludlum GmbH wishes to build on this success in the wider international markets, and specifically North America and the Pacific Rim. To rapidly achieve this Ludlum GmbH looked for a partner that could provide ready-made channels to market and an understanding of its customers and products. LMI provided an ideal match. Ludlum GmbH and LMI together:
- create a strong international competitor to ensure our customers have a choice of suppliers
- Ludlum GmbH's strength in Europe complements LMI’s strength in North America
- provides a strong local sales and lifetime support all over the world
- offer a complete package of C&C systems including personnel, waste, equipment, laundry together with handheld equipment
- addition of German engineering and a new state of the art detection technology
What Does It Mean To Our Customers
Sales and lifetime service will continue to be provided by your established contacts in the existing geographical and product markets.
The most significant change will be seen in North America and the Pacific Rim countries that will now be able to access Ludlum GmbH’s product portfolio through the local LMI distribution networks. Where Ludlum GmbH has existing established distributors they will be maintained.
